Mechanisms of axonal degeneration in peripheral neuropathies
Peripheral neuropathies are the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, affecting more than 20 million patients in the US alone. Many peripheral neuropathies are characterized by early axonal degeneration. Yet the mechanisms leading to axonal degeneration remain poorly understood and no therapies exist to directly target the destructive process. In our laboratory, we integrate information from cell and animal models with genetic data from patients to gain insight into molecular mechanisms underlying axon degeneration and regeneration. The goal of our laboratory is to identify new therapeutic agents that can be translated into relevant treatment strategies for patients suffering from peripheral neuropathies and possibly other neurodegenerative diseases.
