Allograft and the effects of GDNF on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

Susan Mackinnon runs an NIH-funded laboratory investigating nerve allotransplantation for traumatic nerve injury and how Glial Cell-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) effect peripheral nerve regeneration. She also has several clinical studies focusing on peripheral nerve injury. Her areas of clinical interest include peripheral nerve surgery in hand/upper extremity and lower extremity, carpal tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, brachial plexus, cumulative trauma disorder, nerve transplant, nerve compression, facial palsy, and hand and upper extremity disorders and injuries.

Most recently, Dr. Susan E. Mackinnon performed the world’s first donor nerve transplant — a procedure that can save what were previously considered irreparably damaged limbs — and is moving ahead with research in that area.
